A great project you could make for Halloween or any spooky event would be this origami crow. This crow can also be a raven, a cowbird, or any bird type if you use any other colored paper besides black. Once finished, the bird can be placed on any flat surface since it can stand on its own two feet. Make it into an awesome decoration in your front yard for trick-or-treating or an eye-catching décor in any Halloween parties.
If you’re familiar with making a traditional origami bird such as the crane, then this origami crow may be an easy task for you. Like the folding procedures of a Japanese crane, we will use the bird fold or bird base method to make this wonderful origami bird.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
You will need a square piece of paper to make this origami bird. It is best to use black paper so it would resemble a crow or a raven. The first step is to make a bird base which is a common origami fold, to make various origami birds. To do this base fold, you must fold the paper diagonally to the left and the right. Then, crease the paper well and unfold it.
The next step is to make crease marks horizontally and vertically. Mountain fold the paper crosswise and lengthwise in half. Crease well and unfold.
Collapse the paper along the crease marks made. See the next step on how to make it into a square with ease.
Hold the top right corner and the bottom left corner. Bring these two corners together.
Keep on collapsing the origami until it looks like the left image. It will also help if you bring the top left and bottom right corners together. Once the origami looks like the left image, flatten it to form a square. This is the square base. Now rotate it into a diamond shape like the right image.
Fold the left and right corners to the middle crease. Fold the top layer ONLY.
Make a crease along the dashed line as shown. This is by folding the top corner down.
Crease it well and unfold the top triangle.
Gently lift the bottom corner of the top layer ONLY.
Once you are unable to lift it further, squash it down and flatten. You have just made an origami petal fold!
Turn the origami paper around. You will make a petal fold on the other side.
Like what we did from steps 9 and 10, fold the top, left, and right corner to the middle. Crease well, then unfold.
Lift the bottom corner of the top layer upwards, then gently flatten it. Your origami bird base is done!
First, let’s make the feet of the crow. As you can see, there are two triangles on each of the back and the front of the bird base. Fold both the bottom corners of the left and right triangle outwards diagonally to the side.
The 2 small triangles are the feet of the crow. Re-fold the feet slightly outward. Look at the next step to see how they will look like once re-folded.
Fold the top corner of the outer flap downwards.
Fold the origami crow lengthwise in half.
Make an inside reverse fold on the origami’s top part to make the crow’s head and beak. To make an inside reverse fold, pry open the top tip. Then push it down inwards to the center, then flatten.
