Introduction:
Learn how to make a bookmark from a dollar bill with this tutorial! We will make a bookmark origami with a heart design for this dollar bill instruction. Once finished, you may use it to track the progress of your favorite book or give it to someone special to show how much you care for them.
Aside from a dollar bill, you could also use any paper as long as the ratio of its side lengths is the same as the dollar bill. Enjoy reading this guide. And once you’ve mastered it doesn’t forget to share it with someone you like.
Prepare the crease to form a waterbomb to make the dollar bill bookmark
Lay a crisp dollar bill in front of you on a table. The first thing to do is to divide the dollar bill into quarters horizontally. Do so by folding and unfolding along the dashed lines.
You should now have three horizontal crease lines that divides the the dollar into four parts. Fold the top left corner diagonally to the bottom edge of the dollar bill. Crease the dollar bill well and unfold.
Create the waterbomb base of the origami heart bookmark
Repeat step 2 on the opposite side of the crease mark. Then, flip the dollar bill over.
Once you have made the X crease mark, make a vertical crease mark on the X center. Then, flip it over to the other side.
Once you have made the necessary creases on the left side of the dollar bill, form a waterbomb base by lifting the left edge of the dollar to the right side (around the middle are).
Because of the creases made, the dollar bill should fold naturally into a triangle. The waterbomb base should look like this once folded halfway.
Bring the left corner to the edge of the waterbomb base. Do this by lifting the the left corner of the dollar to the right side (around the middle are).
Crease the fold made in the previous step well and then unfold.
Create an arrow head to make the heart base of the bookmark
Like flipping a page of a book, lift the bottom corner of the waterbomb base to the top corner. Make sure to lift the top flap ONLY.
Bring upwards the bottom edge of the dollar bill inside while lifting the top layer of the waterbomb base.
Halfway it should look something like the image above.
Pull down the 2 flaps of the waterbomb base.
Bring downwards the top edge of the dollar bill inside while lifting the top layer of the waterbomb base.
Bring the top flap of the waterbomb base upwards.
The fold made should look like this halfway.
Now that it looks like an arrow head, lift the top layer of the dollar bill to the left side along the dashed line.
As you pry it open, fold diagonally along the dashed lines as shown.
Our origami bookmark is finally taking shape! Time to shape it into a dollar bill heart
Fold the triangle base into a heart
To shape the heart, fold along the corners as shown in the illustration above.
Swing the right side backwards to the other side.
Rotate it so it stands vertically.
Your heart bookmark origami is done!
Extra Tips
- Try creating this bookmark with different kinds of paper. And don't forget to check out some of our other dollar bill origamis below.
- Make sure to apply enough pressure when making creases and folds. A dollar bill is quite thick.
- Money does not tear easily but it is prone to get crumpled. Practice with fake money or a rectangular piece of paper first if you're planning to give the bill/s as a gift.
- Remember, it is highly advisable that you should not cut, burn, staple and/or iron banknotes. Handle it with care
